How To Pass The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 Exam

Passing the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam proves you can use German independently in everyday situations.

Reaching this level opens doors for work, study, and even citizenship in Germany.

The test measures your ability to handle familiar topics like your job, school, and leisure activities.

You’ll be tested on your reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills.

I’ll explain exactly how this test works and how you can prepare for each module effectively.

The B1 exam format explained

The Goethe B1 exam is modular.

This means you can take all four parts on the same day or take them individually on different dates.

To pass a module, you must score at least 60 out of 100 points.

If you fail one module, you only need to retake that specific part.

Here’s a breakdown of the test structure and time limits.

ModuleDurationTasks
Reading (Lesen)65 minutes5 parts (30 items)
Listening (Hören)40 minutes4 parts (30 items)
Writing (Schreiben)60 minutes3 tasks
Speaking (Sprechen)15 minutes3 tasks (done with a partner)

Passing the reading module

The reading module tests your ability to understand blogs, emails, newspaper articles, and advertisements.

You have 65 minutes to complete five different reading tasks.

Time management is your biggest challenge in this section.

Don’t waste time trying to understand every single word.

Practice skimming texts for the main idea and scanning for specific keywords.

When taking the test, always read the questions before you read the text.

This helps you know exactly what information you’re looking for.

Passing the listening module

The listening test takes about 40 minutes and includes announcements, short presentations, and everyday conversations.

Some audio tracks are played twice, while others are only played once.

You must pay very close attention to the instructions for each task.

Read the questions quickly before the audio starts playing.

Underline keywords in the questions so you know what to listen for.

Be careful with distractors.

The speakers will often mention all the options listed in your multiple-choice answers, but only one will be correct in context.

Passing the writing module

The writing section lasts 60 minutes and is divided into three tasks.

You’ll write an informal email, leave a comment expressing your opinion on an online forum, and write a formal email.

You’ll be graded on task completion, coherence, vocabulary, and grammar.

To score high marks, you need to use conjunctions to connect your sentences.

Words like weil, obwohl, and dass show that you can form complex sentences.

You should memorize standard greetings and sign-offs for both formal and informal emails.

Passing the speaking module

The speaking exam is usually taken with a partner and lasts about 15 minutes.

The first task requires you to plan an event or trip together with your partner.

You need to make suggestions, agree with your partner, and politely disagree.

The second task is a short presentation on a specific topic.

You must structure your presentation clearly with an introduction, personal experiences, the situation in your home country, advantages/disadvantages, and a conclusion.

The third task involves answering a question about your presentation and asking your partner a question about theirs.

Memorize transitional phrases to help your presentation flow naturally.
